Upgrading Ubuntu developing machine

For reasons I dont recall I installed PHP 7.0 in favor of 7.1 on my Ubuntu workhorse. Upgraded today with the following process.

// Cleanup
sudo apt-get remove php*

// Add repository for php 7.1 stuff (not available in default repo for Ubuntu 16.04)
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ondrej/php

// Install
sudo apt-get install php7.1 php7.1-curl php7.1-mbstring php7.1-zip php7.1-sqlite php7.1-sqlite php7.1-mysql php7.1-pgsql

// Reinstalled valet
composer global require cpriego/valet-linux
valet install

// Also, had to reboot as valet played some tricks on the DNS settings.

Some nice bash aliases for laravel development

Step up your command line game with some aliases.

Here are some I like:

# general
alias l='ls -ltr'
alias pbcopy='xclip -selection clipboard'

# shortcuts
alias c='cd ~/Code'
alias ~="cd ~"
alias sites-available='cd /etc/nginx/sites-available'

# launch desktop programs
alias C='code .'

# laravel
alias pamf='php artisan migrate:fresh'
alias pat='php artisan tinker'
alias pu="vendor/phpunit/phpunit/phpunit"
alias custom-laravel='sh ~/Code/custom-laravel/custom-laravel.sh'

# clouds
alias terminator='ssh forge@12.345.67.89'
alias robocop='ssh forge@'

# handle aliases with ease
alias set_alias='sudo nano ~/.bash_aliases && source ~/.bashrc'

To get started (on Ubuntu), open (or create) ~/.bash_aliases and fill in your own.

Then restart the console, or run

source ~/.bashrc

Pro tip: copy the last alias in the list above to automate this.
